DILIGENCE

Diligence means steady, earnest, and energetic effort: especially the kind of careful, persistent work that helps us grow.

In simple terms: keep showing up, keep learning, and keep giving your best.

Merriam-Webster traces diligence through Old French and Middle English to the Latin diligentia, meaning “attentiveness” and “carefulness.” It comes from diligere, meaning “to value highly, esteem, or love.” That origin reminds us of something powerful: we work hardest at what we truly value.

For young men and boys, diligence might look like:

• Reading one more page before bedtime

• Asking for help instead of giving up
