Word of the Day: Empowerment (CRC) | Owning Your Power, Shaping Your Future

Welcome back to the daily Word of the Day series with Professor Antonio here at The Competitive Readers Coalition (CRC)! In our journey to elevate vocabulary, build confidence, and inspire young minds across St. Petersburg and beyond, words are our most powerful tools. Today, we are unlocking a concept that defines our mission, our community, and our future: Empowerment.

What Does Empowerment Mean?

At its core, empowerment is defined as the authority or power given to someone to do something; the process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one's life.

It is more than just a buzzword: it is an active, transformative state of mind and action. When young men and boys gain empowerment, they step into the driver's seat of their own education, literacy journeys, and personal growth.

The Etymology: Where Does It Come From?

Language carries history. If we trace the roots of empowerment back through time, we find a rich linguistic lineage:

  • The Roots: From the Latin potere (meaning "to be able" or "to have power") combined with the prefix im- (meaning "in" or "into").

  • Evolution: This evolved into the English verb empower, which originally meant to legally authorize, grant official power, or give someone the capacity to act.

  • Today's Meaning: Over centuries, the definition expanded from formal legal authorization to encompass personal and collective liberation: the ongoing process of enabling individuals and communities to claim their strengths and shape their destinies.

How Empowerment Drives Success and Community

How does this elevated vocabulary word translate into everyday life and community impact?

"Empowerment is what happens when a young man realizes his voice matters : and that realization changes everything for him and his community."

Through our signature initiatives: from FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM to our Youth Workforce Development and Training programs: CRC brings literacy experiences and leadership mentoring directly into trusted community spaces. When boys see themselves reflected in culturally responsive learning environments, they don't just read better; they lead stronger.
