Every young man standing on a corner in St. Petersburg, or sitting in a classroom in Pinellas County, holds within him a blueprint for greatness. This blueprint isn't just about reading words on a page; it is about the transformative power of understanding the world around him. In a world that often moves too fast, the ability to slow down, look ahead, and make decisions that ripple positively through generations is the ultimate competitive advantage. We believe that when we empower our youth with the tools of literacy and the strength of character, we aren't just improving test scores: we are building a vibrant, resilient community where every young man sees himself as a visionary leader.
At The Competitive Readers Coalition (CRC), our mission is to ensure that no child’s potential is left untapped. We recognize that the journey from the barbershop chair to the executive boardroom requires more than just academic knowledge; it requires a specific kind of internal compass. This brings us to a word that sits at the very heart of leadership and mature decision-making.
The Deep Dive: Understanding Sagacity
Our word of the week is one that carries the weight of history and the promise of a bright future: Sagacity.
According to Merriam-Webster, sagacity is defined as the quality of being sagacious: possessing keen mental discernment and soundness of judgment. It is the ability to see through the noise of the moment and make a choice that serves you well in the long run.
Origin: The word comes from the Latin sagacitas, which literally means "keenness of scent."
Impact: In ancient times, it described a hunter who could track a trail others couldn't see. Today, we use it to describe a young man who can "scent" a good opportunity or "sense" a bad situation before it unfolds.
Sagacity is more than just being "smart." You can be smart and still make impulsive choices. Sagacity is about wisdom. It’s about having the foresight to realize that the book you read today or the money you save this afternoon is a brick in the foundation of the house you will own tomorrow. It’s about snipping away at the threads of illiteracy and impulsivity to reveal a sharp, discerning mind.
From the Barbershop to the Boardroom: Vision in Action
At CRC, we see sagacity in action every time a young man picks up a book at the barbershop. It takes discernment to realize that while others might be scrolling aimlessly, he is investing in his own "Erudition" and "Acumen": words we’ve explored in our previous deep-dives.
This evolution of the mind is what powers our signature program, FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM. We aren't just teaching boys to decode sentences; we are teaching them to decode life. When a young man develops sagacity, he begins to see the barbershop not just as a place for a "Competitive Readers Cut," but as a sanctuary of mentorship and a launchpad for his professional dreams.
By bringing literacy experiences into barbershops and other trusted community spaces, we meet our young men where they are. We show them that being a reader is a mark of strength. It is the "keenness of mental discernment" that allows them to navigate social pressures and stay focused on their goals.
Equipping the Next Generation of Leaders
One of the vital branches of our 8-program family is Youth Workforce Development and Training. This program is specifically designed to transition our youth from the comfort of the shop into the high-stakes environment of the professional world.
The theme for this pillar is "Equipping the Next Generation of Leaders." In this program, sagacity is the primary tool. We teach our participants how to:
Analyze complex situations in the workplace with a calm, discerning eye.
Communicate with authority and clarity, using an elevated lexicon to command respect.
Lead with integrity, making choices that reflect their values even when no one is watching.
Data shows that youth who participate in structured mentorship and literacy-focused workforce training are significantly more likely to secure higher-paying jobs and maintain long-term employment. By fostering sagacity, we are effectively breaking the school-to-prison pipeline and replacing it with a pipeline to professional success and civic engagement.
Building Generational Wealth through Literacy and Ownership
True sagacity involves looking far into the future: not just for oneself, but for one's family. This is why we have integrated the Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program (in partnership with LMCU) as a core pillar of the CRC mission.
The theme here is "Building Generational Wealth through Literacy and Ownership." We know that for many families in the Pinellas area, homeownership is the key to stability and long-term prosperity. However, the path to ownership begins with the literacy required to understand contracts, credit scores, and mortgage terms.
When a young man learns the "Lexicon" of finance, he is exercising sagacity. He is looking past the immediate gratification of a purchase and seeing the "Magnanimity" of leaving a legacy for his future children. We aren't just talking about money; we are talking about the "Efficacy" of owning the ground you stand on. This program empowers parents and young men alike to take control of their financial destinies, ensuring that the wealth created in our community stays in our community.
How to Apply Sagacity Today
You don't have to wait until you're in a boardroom to practice sagacity. Here are three ways our young kings can start leading with wisdom today:
Practice Foresight: Before making a decision, ask yourself: "How will I feel about this choice in ten minutes? Ten months? Ten years?"
Seek Mentorship: A sagacious person knows they don't know everything. Listen to the "Ogas" and mentors in the barbershop who have walked the path before you.
Read Daily: Every page you read increases your mental discernment. It sharpens your mind like a barber sharpens his razor.
