More Than a Haircut.
A Chance to Shape a Child’s Future.

Join the Competitive Readers Coalition as a Literacy Ambassador Barber or Stylist—and turn your chair into a space where confidence, culture, and reading come together.

How Can Barbers and Stylists Help Improve Literacy?

Barbershops and salons have always been more than places to get a cut. They are trusted community spaces—where conversations happen, confidence is built, and young people feel seen.

The Competitive Readers Coalition was built on a simple idea:
when children feel safe, affirmed, and proud, learning follows.

By pairing culturally relevant books with the mentorship that already happens in the chair, we help children:

  • Build reading confidence

  • Strengthen identity and self-esteem

  • Grow a love for books that lasts beyond the shop

As a Literacy Ambassador, you will:

This isn’t about being a teacher.

It’s about being present, encouraging, and consistent.

The Impact You’ll Make

Through this program, you help:

  • Increase literacy confidence for Black and Brown youth

  • Build home libraries with culturally affirming books

  • Reinforce pride, discipline, and self-expression

  • Strengthen families’ connection to reading and learning

Every session adds up.
Every conversation matters.
Every child leaves with more than they arrived with.
