Language is the most potent tool we possess for self-determination and community transformation. For the young men growing up in Pinellas County and across the nation, the ability to command a room with nothing but your intellect and your vocabulary is a revolutionary act. At The Competitive Readers Coalition (CRC), we believe that literacy is not just a school subject: it is the foundation of character, the engine of economic mobility, and the most effective way to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline.
When we equip our youth with high-level, academic language, we aren’t just teaching them words; we are giving them the keys to every boardroom, every laboratory, and every legislative hall in the country. We are moving our young Kings from the periphery of society to the very center of the conversation. This is about more than reading books; it’s about mastering the world.
Meet Professor Antonio
In our daily micro-blog series, we are led by a figure who embodies the blend of street-smart wisdom and academic excellence: Professor Antonio. You’ll see him in our community, his signature bald head gleaming under the lights of the barbershop or the fluorescent bulbs of a tech suite. Whether he’s rocking a crisp CRC Polo, a sharp Professional Suit, or draped in a Barber Cape during a fresh fade, Professor Antonio is here to remind our young men that being a "Competitive Reader" is the ultimate flex.

Word of the Day: Erudition
Today’s word is one that carries weight. It’s a word that sounds like the future we are building.
The Word: Erudition (noun) The Pronunciation: air-yuh-DISH-un
Definition: Erudition refers to extensive knowledge acquired chiefly from books; it is profound, scholarly knowledge that goes beyond the surface level. It is the result of deep study and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Etymology (Origin): The word comes to us from the Latin eruditio, which stems from the verb erudire, meaning "to instruct." If we break it down further, it comes from e- (a variant of ex-, meaning "out of") and rudis (meaning "rude" or "unskilled/rough"). Literally translated, to gain erudition is to be "taken out of the rough." It is the process of polishing one's mind until it shines.
In a Sentence: "By pursuing erudition, we sharpen our minds to become the leaders our community needs, proving that our intellect is our greatest asset in the journey FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM."
Why Erudition Matters for the CRC Family
In the neighborhoods of St. Petersburg and throughout Pinellas, our young men are often judged by their "rough" exterior before they ever get a chance to speak. Erudition is the process of smoothing those edges through the power of the written word. It’s about being "un-rude": not in the sense of manners, but in the sense of being refined, capable, and deeply knowledgeable.
When a young man enters our Youth Workforce Development and Training program, he is starting a journey of refinement. This program is specifically designed to transition our youth from the trusted community spaces of the barbershop into the professional world. We are equipping the next generation of leaders with the technical skills and the social capital they need to thrive. Erudition is the fuel for that transition.

From the Barbershop to the Boardroom
Our flagship initiative, FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM, is where this word comes to life. We take the vibrant, culturally rich environment of the barbershop: a place where life lessons are already being taught: and we infuse it with high-level literacy. We are "snipping away at illiteracy" one page at a time.
When our young men engage with Professor Antonio, they aren't just getting a haircut; they are getting a masterclass in identity-centered programming. We focus on the 8-program family that touches every aspect of a young man’s life. From literacy to leadership, we are building a holistic path to success.
One of the most critical parts of that path is our 5th pillar: The Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program, in partnership with Lake Michigan Credit Union (LMCU). We believe in building generational wealth through literacy and ownership. You cannot own what you do not understand. Erudition in financial matters: understanding interest rates, equity, and asset management: is how we ensure our community stays rooted and prosperous for generations to come.
Building Success and Community
Erudition isn't a solitary pursuit. It’s not about being "smarter" than the person next to you just for the sake of pride. It’s about bringing that knowledge back to the block. True erudition serves the community. When one of our young men masters a complex concept, he becomes a beacon for his peers. He shows that the school-to-prison pipeline is not an inevitability, but a choice that can be rejected through the power of a sharpened mind.
Imagine a young man in South St. Pete, sitting in a barber chair. He’s reading a book on coding or financial management while he waits for his turn. He is practicing erudition. He is showing everyone in that shop that his future is not limited by his zip code. He is a Competitive Reader. He is CRC.

The Power of Representation
At the CRC, we know that you can’t be what you can’t see. That’s why our content, our mentors, and our stories focus exclusively on BIPOC excellence. We are highlighting the brilliance that has always existed in our community but has often been overlooked or suppressed.
Professor Antonio is a symbol of that excellence. Whether he’s talking about the etymology of "erudition" or the mechanics of a "Competitive Readers Cut," he is showing our youth that you can be authentic to your culture while being a master of academic and professional spaces.

A Call to Action
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single word. Today, that word is erudition. Tomorrow, it might be acumen or sagacity. But the goal remains the same: to empower our young men to be the authors of their own stories.
We invite you to join this movement. Whether you are a parent looking for a program that affirms your son’s identity, a community member wanting to support literacy, or a young man ready to take his place in the boardroom, there is a place for you here.
