That is why our alignment with the Juvenile Welfare Board (JWB) of Pinellas County, particularly through the remarkable JWB Summer Book Bus program running through July 23, 2026, represents a transformative leap forward for local families. By uniting JWB’s countywide mobile literacy reach with CRC’s grassroots initiatives in barbershops and trusted community environments, we are building an unbreakable bridge toward academic excellence and generational success for St. Petersburg youth.
The JWB Partnership: Fueling the Early Readers, Future Leaders Campaign
When we talk about creating lasting change in Pinellas County literacy, we must look at systemic solutions that meet children where they are. The JWB Summer Book Bus is a shining example of this mission in action. Operating as a mobile library on wheels in partnership with Pinellas County Schools, the Book Bus is a core pillar of the Early Readers, Future Leaders: Pinellas Campaign for Grade-Level Reading.

Central to this work is our signature program, FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM. For young Black and brown boys, the neighborhood barbershop is much more than a place to get a fresh haircut: it is a trusted cultural anchor, a sanctuary of mentorship, and a site of community wisdom.
By implementing our barbershop literacy program, CRC bridges the gap between recreation and education. When a boy sees culturally responsive books displayed on styling station shelves, reads alongside mentors who look like him, and engages in discussions about vocabulary, critical thinking, and character, his perception of reading shifts instantly.
