Professor Antonio's Word of the Day: 30 Character-Building Words Every Young Man Should Know

Words are power. They're the tools we use to express our dreams, advocate for our communities, and build the future we deserve. At The Competitive Readers Coalition, we believe that every young man: from toddlers discovering their first picture books to high school seniors preparing to step into their purpose: needs a vocabulary that matches the magnitude of his potential.

That's where Professor Antonio comes in. Our beloved mentor and literacy champion has curated 30 essential words that go beyond the classroom and straight into character. These aren't just vocabulary words to memorize for a test: they're life words, identity words, legacy words. Each one carries the weight of wisdom and the promise of transformation.

Whether your son is sitting in a barber chair through our FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM program, exploring homeownership concepts through our Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program with LMCU, or developing leadership skills through Youth Workforce Development and Training, these words will serve as anchors for his journey.

Why These Words Matter

In Pinellas County barbershops, living rooms, and community centers, young men are discovering that vocabulary isn't just about reading comprehension: it's about self-comprehension. When a ten-year-old can articulate his feelings with precision, when a teenager can demonstrate discernment in tough decisions, when a young man shows magnanimity toward others, we're witnessing more than literacy gains. We're watching character take root.

Professor Antonio, with his rotating wardrobe of CRC polos, professional suits, and barber capes, meets young men exactly where they are. He knows that the same boy who might feel disconnected in a traditional classroom might light up when learning vocabulary in a barber chair or during a Books Beyond overnight adventure at the Florida Aquarium.

These 30 words represent more than definitions to memorize. They're identity markers, conversation starters, and confidence builders. When a young man can name what he's experiencing: whether that's showing resilience after a setback or exercising prudent judgment about his future: he gains agency over his narrative.

Your Turn to Build Vocabulary Power

Start with one word per week. Display it on the refrigerator. Use it in conversation. Challenge your son to find it in the books he's reading or the conversations happening around him. Celebrate when he uses it naturally and authentically.

At The Competitive Readers Coalition, we're building more than readers: we're developing young men who command language, understand their worth, and speak their truth with erudition and confidence. From the barbershop to the boardroom and every space in between, these words become the foundation for remarkable futures.
