Every child deserves to walk into a room and feel like the smartest person there. Not out of arrogance, but out of an unshakable confidence rooted in their own potential. In St. Petersburg, we aren’t just teaching kids to decode words on a page; we are cultivating a generation of thinkers, owners, and leaders who understand that literacy is the ultimate superpower. It is the foundation of freedom, the architect of generational wealth, and the engine of social mobility.
But transformation doesn’t just happen in the classroom. It happens in the mirror. It happens when a young man sees himself represented not as a stereotype, but as a scholar. That is why The Competitive Readers Coalition (CRC) is thrilled to unveil our latest drop: The Competitive Scholar Collection C3.
This isn't just "merch." It’s a uniform for the movement. When you wear these threads, you aren't just supporting a non-profit; you are signaling to every young person in our community that being a scholar is the highest form of "cool."
Word of the Day: Erudition
Before we dive into the fresh gear, let’s level up our collective lexicon. At CRC, we believe in "identity-centered programming," which means we speak life and high-level language into our scholars from day one.
Word of the Day: Erudition /ˌer.jəˈdiSH.ən/ Noun: The quality of having or showing great knowledge or learning; scholarship.
In our FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM program, we don’t just ask boys if they like the book; we challenge them to demonstrate their erudition. We want them to take pride in the depth of their knowledge. Wearing the C3 collection is an outward expression of inward erudition. It’s about being a "Competitive Scholar" in every sense of the word: striving for excellence, seeking mastery, and never settling for "good enough."
The C3 Lineup: Drip with a Purpose
We know our community has style. Whether you’re heading to a board meeting, dropping the kids off at school, or hitting the barbershop for a fresh fade, you want to look good. The Competitive Scholar Collection C3 on Bonfire was designed with that versatility in mind.
Here is what’s waiting for you in the shop:
The Pullover Hoodie: Perfect for those "Florida winters" (you know, the three weeks of 60-degree weather) or just chilling in the AC. It’s cozy, bold, and sends a clear message.
The Comfort Colors Unisex Tee: For those who know, Comfort Colors is the gold standard of tees. It has that lived-in feel from day one.
The Premium Unisex Tee: Sleek, soft, and fits like a dream. This is for the scholar who appreciates the finer details.
The Classic Unisex Tee: A sturdy, reliable staple for everyday advocacy.
The Crewneck Sweatshirt: High-tier comfort for the modern intellectual.
The Youth Unisex Tee: This is the most important item in the shop. We need our young kings and queens rocking this mindset early.
Our goal is to sell 50 items during this campaign launch. Every single purchase goes directly toward funding our literacy initiatives, stocking our "Dads Treasure Chests," and ensuring that our programs remain free and accessible to the families in Pinellas County who need them most.

More Than a Shirt: Building the Five Pillars
When you support the C3 collection, you are fueling a holistic ecosystem of empowerment. CRC doesn't just hand out books; we build foundations. Our mission is built on five strategic pillars designed to move our youth FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM.
1. Identity-Centered Literacy
We provide books where BIPOC children see themselves as the heroes, the scientists, and the innovators. When a young boy sees a character who looks like him achieving greatness, his own horizon expands.
2. Community Engagement
We meet our families where they are. By bringing literacy experiences into barbershops and other trusted community spaces, we remove the "academic" stigma and replace it with community connection.
3. Youth Workforce Development and Training
This pillar is all about "Equipping the Next Generation of Leaders." We focus on the transition from the shop to the professional world, teaching our scholars the soft skills, networking, and professional etiquette they need to thrive in any environment.
4. The Clipper Chronicles
Our storytelling and media branch ensures that our community's narrative is told by us, for us.
5. Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program (Partner: LMCU)
In partnership with Lake Michigan Credit Union (LMCU), we are focused on "Building Generational Wealth through Literacy and Ownership." We believe that true scholarship includes understanding how money works. We are teaching our families that literacy isn't just about reading a book: it’s about reading a mortgage contract, understanding an investment portfolio, and securing a legacy.
A Story of Impact: Marcus and the Power of Representation
Imagine a young man named Marcus. Marcus is ten years old, living in the heart of St. Pete. For a long time, Marcus thought reading was "boring" or something he only did because a teacher told him to. Then, his dad, Andre, took him to the Central Station Barbershop & Grooming for his monthly cut.

While Andre was getting his beard trimmed, Marcus noticed a bookshelf filled with vibrant covers. He picked up a book about a young Black boy who traveled through time using math. He started reading. By the time his name was called for the "Competitive Readers Cut," he didn't want to put the book down.
That day, Andre bought Marcus a "Competitive Scholar" youth tee. When Marcus wears that shirt to school, he isn't just a kid in a t-shirt. He’s a scholar. He’s a reader. He’s part of a coalition. That shift in identity is what CRC is all about. We are snipping away at illiteracy one conversation at a time.
How to Get Started

It’s that simple. You get the fresh cut, and the scholar gets the fresh mindset.
The 50-Item Challenge: We Need You
We are on a mission to reach our 50-item goal on Bonfire. Why 50? Because 50 items sold means we can sponsor an entire month of community literacy pop-ups. It means we can add more titles to our "Dads Treasure Chests." It means we can continue to prove that St. Pete is a city of scholars.
Whether you choose the Comfort Colors Tee or the Pullover Hoodie, know that your purchase is a seed planted in the fertile soil of a child’s future. You aren't just buying clothes; you’re investing in the "erudition" of our youth.

Wear the Mindset. Build the Future.
The school-to-prison pipeline is a reality that we refuse to accept. We know the statistics: children who aren't reading at grade level by the third grade are significantly more likely to face challenges later in life. But we also know the solution. When we surround our children with books, mentors, and a community that celebrates their intellect, those statistics don't stand a chance.
The Competitive Scholar Collection C3 is a celebration of that resilience. It is a tribute to the parents who are working two jobs but still make time to read at night. It is a nod to the barbers who have become literacy advocates. It is a promise to our scholars that we see their brilliance, and we are here to back it up.
So, let’s get to work. Let’s hit that goal. Let’s show the world what a Competitive Scholar looks like.
