Word of the Day: Tenacity (CRC) | Hold On, Grow Strong
Tenacity (noun)
Merriam-Webster defines tenacity as “the quality or state of being tenacious.” In kid-friendly words, it means sticking with something, even when it takes effort.
The word comes from Latin tenacitas, from tenax, “holding fast,” from tenere, “to hold.” Merriam-Webster gives its first known use as the 15th century. Explore the Merriam-Webster entry for tenacity.
Tenacity helps young people keep learning through challenges and encourages a community where everyone can grow.
Try This Word Together
Ask your child: “What’s one thing you’re working on that you don’t want to give up on?” Talk about one small step they can take today, and how a family member or friend can encourage them.
Example: “With tenacity, Marcus practiced reading each evening until the story felt easier.”
Tenacity in Our Community
In St. Petersburg and across Pinellas County, every chance to read, learn, and build confidence can help a young person keep moving forward. CRC’s 8-program family creates opportunities for youth to grow through identity-centered learning and community connection.
Through FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM, CRC brings literacy experiences into barbershops and other trusted community spaces. Youth Workforce Development and Training, themed “Equipping the Next Generation of Leaders,” supports young people as they prepare to move from the shop into the professional world.
Families, mentors, and community partners all have a part to play. A little encouragement can help a young reader hold on to a goal, and discover how much they can accomplish.
