Welcome to The Competitive Readers Coalition

Empowering Minds, One Book at a Time

Formerly known as the Barbershop Book Club Inc., The Competitive Readers Coalition Inc. is a non-profit organization on a mission to unlock the gates of literacy in children by carving spaces for creativity, learning, and growth within the Tampa Bay area.

Our Mission: Is to transform lives by empowering, edifying and encouraging excellence in black & brown boys 1 Book, 1 Haircut, 1 Barber/Mentor at a time. Our objective is to change the world by instilling a love for reading in young black boys globally, promoting positive images through books that incorporate name, image, and likeness, providing mentorship and support in sports, building home libraries, and fostering essential life and financial skills.

Our organization is dedicated to nurturing children's growth and development. Each year, we provide:

  • 24 Free Books per child

  • 24 Free Haircuts per child

Throughout the year, children will have the opportunity to visit their trusted barbershop, where they can enjoy a haircut while indulging in their love for reading.

During these visits, our friendly barbers will actively engage with the children, encouraging them to read aloud from their new books. This initiative creates a positive and nurturing environment that fosters:

  • Self-Care

  • Cultural Awareness

  • Self-Confidence

  • Financial Literacy

  • Building home libraries

  • Black Male Advancement

Antonio Brown is an exceptional Barber. He was very patience with my 15 month old son as he received first haircut. He took his time to get him acclimated to his equipment and talked to him about what was about to happen. I really appreciate the time and patience he took with my son and reassuring me everything was going to be ok.
