Empathy means understanding and caring about another person’s feelings, thoughts, or experience.
Where Does “Empathy” Come From?
Empathy comes from the Greek empatheia, built from em- (“in”) + pathos (“feeling”). The modern English word was also shaped by the German Einfühlung, meaning “feeling into.”
Why It Matters
Empathy supports success and builds community because it helps young people listen well, solve problems, and make others feel seen and respected.
At CRC, including FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM, we believe words like this can strengthen leadership, self-awareness, and connection in barbershops, homes, schools, and other trusted community spaces.

Today, pause and ask one person, “How are you feeling?” Then listen all the way through before you respond.
