In the vibrant communities of St. Petersburg and across Pinellas County, our young men are navigating a world that often demands more than just intelligence; it demands a specific type of inner strength. To transform the landscape of our neighborhoods and ensure our youth see themselves as the leaders they are meant to be, we must equip them with a vocabulary that reflects their potential.

Building literacy isn't just about reading a book; it’s about reading the room, reading the situation, and reading the path to success. Today, we are diving deep into a word that serves as the foundation for every great leader: Fortitude.

The Word of the Day: Fortitude

Definition: According to Merriam-Webster, fortitude is the "strength of mind that enables a person to encounter danger or bear pain or adversity with courage."

Etymology: The word traces its roots back to the Latin fortitūdō, meaning "strength, firmness, or courage." This comes from fortis, the Latin word for "strong" or "brave." It is the same root that gives us the word "fort," suggesting that fortitude is about building a mental stronghold that cannot be easily breached.

Application Sentence: "The young scholar displayed immense fortitude by continuing to master his reading skills even when the text was challenging, eventually leading him from the barbershop to the boardroom."

More Than Just "Toughness"

When we talk to our young men in Pinellas, the word "strong" often gets associated with physical prowess or the ability to endure outward pressure. But at CRC, we want to shift that narrative. Fortitude is about mental and emotional strength. It is the quiet resolve that allows a student to say "no" to negative peer pressure or the persistence to keep studying after a difficult exam.

In the context of our Youth Workforce Development and Training program, fortitude is what allows a young man to transition from the comfortable, trusted environment of a local barbershop into the high-stakes professional world. It is the inner "fort" that protects his dreams from the arrows of doubt and systemic challenges.

Snipping Away at Illiteracy and the Pipeline

The school-to-prison pipeline is a reality that we cannot ignore, but we can dismantle it, one word at a time. Research consistently shows that literacy disparities, particularly among young Black men, often serve as the first brick in that pipeline. When a child falls behind in reading by the third grade, the frustration and disengagement can lead to disciplinary issues and, eventually, a path away from the classroom.

By introducing words like fortitude, we are giving our youth a framework for self-awareness. When a student understands that the difficulty they feel while reading is an opportunity to build fortitude, the narrative changes. They aren't "failing"; they are "fortifying."

CRC brings these transformative literacy experiences into barbershops and other trusted community spaces because we know that identity-centered programming is the key to engagement. We aren't just teaching kids to read; we are inspiring them to lead. When we empower a young man with the lexicon of success, we are helping him "snip away" at the negative statistics and carve out a new future.

From the Barbershop to the Boardroom

Our signature program, FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM, is designed to bridge the gap between community comfort and professional excellence. The fortitude built while sitting in a barber’s chair: discussing community issues, reading challenging texts, and engaging with mentors: is the same fortitude needed to sit at a boardroom table.

Building generational wealth through literacy and ownership is a cornerstone of our mission. Through our Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program (Partner: LMCU), we emphasize that the path to ownership starts with the discipline of the mind. Equipping the next generation of leaders means showing them that their voice, their literacy, and their fortitude are their most valuable assets.

Whether it’s understanding a mortgage agreement or navigating a corporate contract, the academic vocabulary we teach provides the keys to the doors that were previously locked.

For an eight-year-old boy in St. Pete, fortitude might look like finishing a chapter book that feels too long. For an eighteen-year-old, it might look like applying for a competitive internship despite the fear of rejection. In every stage of growth, fortitude is the fuel for transformative change.
