Ingenuity means skill or cleverness in devising or combining ideas; inventiveness.
In simple terms, ingenuity is the power to find a smart way forward: even when the answer is not obvious.
The word comes from Latin ingenuitas, connected to the idea of being freeborn and having an open, honest spirit. Its modern meaning was also shaped by the related word ingenious, which comes from Latin ingenium, meaning natural ability, talent, or mental power. Merriam-Webster defines ingenuity as “skill or cleverness in devising or combining; inventiveness.”
Why Ingenuity Matters
Every young man and boy has ideas worth developing.
Ingenuity can look like finding a new way to understand a challenging book, creating a solution to a problem at school, helping a younger sibling, or using your voice to make a trusted community space stronger.
Reading builds ingenuity because books introduce us to new questions, perspectives, and possibilities. When young readers see themselves reflected in stories: and discover characters who think, create, overcome, and lead: they gain confidence in their own ability to imagine what comes next.
At CRC, literacy is more than reading words on a page. It is about helping young people build confidence, identity, communication skills, and the courage to participate in their families and communities.
As CRC says, “when children feel safe, affirmed, and proud, learning follows.” That belief guides literacy experiences in St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, and communities across Florida.
Ingenuity in the Barbershop
A barbershop can be more than a place for a fresh cut. It can be a trusted community space where young people feel seen, encouraged, and ready to grow.
Through FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM, CRC brings books, conversation, and mentorship into spaces where young men and boys already feel comfortable. A conversation about a story can help a young reader connect a character’s choices to real life. A few minutes of reading can strengthen confidence. A caring adult can help a child recognize that his ideas matter.
That is ingenuity in action: creating meaningful learning opportunities in places that already hold community trust.
Try the Ingenuity Challenge
Today, try this:
Choose a book, article, comic, or school assignment.
Find one problem or question in it.
Think of three different ways to solve the problem or answer the question.
Share your best idea with a parent, mentor, barber, teacher, or friend.
There is no requirement for your first idea to be perfect. Ingenuity grows when you stay curious, keep trying, and remain open to a better possibility.
Parents and caregivers can help by asking:
“What made you think of that?”
“What other solution could work?”
“How could your idea help someone else?”
These questions turn everyday conversations into opportunities for literacy and leadership.
