Your Words Are Your Power
Every leader, every visionary, every young man who's ever stood up and spoken his truth started with the same foundation: words.
Not just any words, his words. A personal collection of language that helps him express who he is, what he believes, and where he's headed. Today, we're diving deep into a word that captures this power perfectly.
Welcome to the final installment of our first Word of the Day series here at The Competitive Readers Coalition (CRC). We've explored erudition, acumen, sagacity, efficacy, reciprocity, and magnanimity. Now we wrap it all up with a word that ties everything together.
Let's build your lexicon.
🎤 The Word: LEXICON
[GRAPHIC DIRECTION: Feature "Coach Antonio (CRC)", a mini Afrocentric comic character version of Antonio, in a dynamic pose with a speech bubble saying "LEXICON!" The character should be surrounded by floating words and open books, representing vocabulary and knowledge. Keep the style vibrant, culturally relevant, and inspiring.]

📖 Quick Breakdown
Pronunciation: LEK-sih-kon
Meaning: Your personal word-bank, your vocabulary. The complete set of words and phrases you understand and use to communicate.
Think of your lexicon as your toolkit. The more tools you have, the more you can build. The more words you command, the more clearly you can express your ideas, defend your position, and inspire others to follow your lead.
✊ Why Lexicon Matters for Our Sons
Here's the truth: words shape reality.
When a young Black boy can articulate his feelings, describe his dreams, and defend his ideas with precision, he becomes unstoppable. A rich lexicon isn't about sounding "fancy" or impressing adults, it's about having the right word at the right moment to say exactly what you mean.
Imagine two scenarios:
Scenario A: A young man feels frustrated but can only say, "I'm mad."
Scenario B: That same young man pauses and says, "I feel disrespected because my effort wasn't acknowledged."
Same feeling. Completely different impact.
The second response opens doors. It invites conversation. It commands respect. That's the power of an expanded lexicon, and it's exactly what we cultivate at CRC through identity-centered programming that meets our young kings where they are.
💬 Use It in a Sentence (CRC-Style)
Here are a few ways to drop "lexicon" into everyday conversation:
"Reading every day expands your lexicon, and with more words, you can speak your truth more clearly."
"At CRC, we help young men build their lexicon so they can lead in the classroom, the barbershop, and the boardroom."
"Your lexicon is yours. No one can take it from you. The more you grow it, the more powerful you become."
Try using "lexicon" this week. Say it out loud. Write it down. Make it part of your word-bank.
🧠 The Identity Connection
At CRC, everything we do centers on identity-first literacy. We don't just teach boys to read, we help them see themselves as readers. As leaders. As young men with something important to say.
Building a strong lexicon is central to this mission. When our sons encounter words like erudition, acumen, sagacity, efficacy, reciprocity, magnanimity, and now lexicon, they're not just learning definitions. They're expanding their sense of what's possible.
They're learning that elevated language belongs to them, too.
🔗 How Lexicon Connects to the CRC 8-Program Family
A strong vocabulary shows up across every pillar of our work:
The Dads Treasure Chest , Fathers and father figures model rich language at home, reading aloud and introducing new words during quality time with their children.
The Library Barbershop Studio Model , Trusted community spaces like barbershops become vocabulary-rich environments where young men encounter new words organically while getting fresh cuts.
From the Barbershop to the Boardroom , Professional settings demand professional communication. A robust lexicon helps our young men transition confidently from community spaces to corporate environments.
Youth Workforce Development and Training , Equipping the next generation of leaders means giving them the language skills to interview, collaborate, and advocate for themselves in the workplace.
Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program (Partner: LMCU) , Building generational wealth requires understanding terms like equity, mortgage, interest, and investment. Financial vocabulary is part of a complete lexicon.
Our Fatherhood Initiative , Dads who expand their own lexicon model lifelong learning for their children.
9-Week Summer Camp , Intensive literacy programming gives campers daily opportunities to encounter and practice new vocabulary.
Barber-Preneur Program , Entrepreneurs need the words to pitch ideas, negotiate deals, and build client relationships.
Everywhere CRC shows up, lexicon matters.
⏱️ Try It at Home (60 Seconds)
Here's a quick parent/child activity you can do tonight at dinner, in the car, or before bed:
The 3-Word Challenge
Each person picks 3 new words they've heard or read recently (or grab them from this Word of the Day series!).
Take turns using each word in a sentence.
Bonus round: Can you use all 3 words in one sentence?
This simple exercise turns vocabulary building into a game, and games stick. You're not just teaching words; you're creating a shared family practice that reinforces the "reader identity" we champion at CRC.
📚 The Bigger Picture
This Word of the Day series has been about more than definitions. It's been about ownership.
When our sons own words like lexicon, magnanimity, and erudition, they own a piece of their future. They carry language that opens doors, commands attention, and reflects the brilliance already inside them.
At CRC, we believe every young Black boy deserves access to elevated vocabulary, not someday, but right now. In barbershops. In libraries. At kitchen tables. In summer camps. Wherever our community gathers.
Your lexicon is your superpower. Keep building it.
