Today’s Word: Unity

Unity means being joined together as one. It can describe people working in harmony, sharing a purpose, and making sure everyone has a chance to contribute.

The word unity comes from Middle English unite, Anglo-French unité, and Latin unitas/unitat-, from unus meaning “one.”

Think about a team. Every player may have a different role, but the team becomes stronger when everyone communicates, supports one another, and works toward the same goal. That is unity in action.

Unity supports success and builds community because working together helps us learn more, solve problems, and make room for everyone to grow.

Unity in the Barbershop

At CRC, literacy grows in barbershops and other trusted community spaces. A young reader might open a book while waiting for a haircut, practice a new word with a trusted adult, or talk about a story with another young person.

Those moments show how unity can turn an ordinary visit into an empowering learning experience. Families, barbers, educators, and community partners each bring something valuable. Together, we help young readers build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and see themselves as capable leaders.

A book can start the conversation. A supportive community can help carry it forward.

Try the Unity Challenge

Today, choose one way to practice unity:

• Invite someone to read with you.

• Listen carefully when another person shares an idea.

• Help a family member, classmate, or friend solve a problem.

• Make room for someone who has not been included yet.

• Share one new word you learned.

Then complete this sentence:

“Unity matters to me because __________.”

Young readers can write their answer, say it aloud, or share it during a visit to a barbershop or another trusted community space.

A Prompt for Parents and Caregivers

Ask your child:

“When have you seen people work together to make something better?”

Their answer could be about school, sports, family, friends, a neighborhood project, or a story they have read. Encourage them to explain what each person contributed. This simple conversation builds vocabulary, comprehension, self-awareness, and confidence.

You can also invite your child to find examples of unity in a book. Who works together? What challenge do they face? How does cooperation help the characters move forward?

Unity reminds us that young people do not have to grow alone. When families, trusted adults, barbers, educators, and community partners connect around literacy, reading becomes more than a school skill. It becomes a pathway to confidence, belonging, civic engagement, and brighter futures.
