Today’s Word: Zeal
Zeal means “eager and enthusiastic desire or endeavor; passionate intensity of feeling,” according to Merriam-Webster.
In everyday language, zeal is the fire you bring to something you care about.
The word zeal comes from Middle English zele, from Late Latin zelus, from Greek zēlos, meaning “fervor, ardor, jealousy.” Its first known use in English was in the 14th century.
Why Zeal Matters
Zeal can help young readers keep going when a book feels challenging, practice harder when a skill feels new, and show up with confidence for school, sports, and service.
But zeal is not only personal fuel. When a young person brings passionate effort to the people around them, that energy can lift a whole neighborhood, not just one individual. A reader who shares a book, encourages a teammate, or helps a younger child is turning personal fire into community progress.

Zeal in Action
A young reader can practice zeal by:
At school: Asking one thoughtful question or giving extra effort to a challenging assignment.
With reading: Reading for ten minutes and sharing one interesting idea from the book.
In sports: Encouraging a teammate, practicing a skill, and staying focused after a mistake.
Through service: Helping at home, supporting a neighbor, or making a trusted community space more welcoming.
Zeal does not mean being loud all the time or doing everything perfectly. It means bringing purpose, effort, and heart to the next positive step.

Then take one action that matches your answer. Read a page. Practice a skill. Help someone. Speak up with respect. Let your fire become something useful.
