The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single word. In the vibrant streets of St. Petersburg, Florida, where the sun shines bright and our potential shines even brighter, we know that literacy is the ultimate superpower. For our young Kings, ages 1 to 18, mastering a new word isn't just about passing a test; it’s about claiming a seat at the table. It’s about the transformative power of shifting from the sidewalk to the executive suite.
At The Competitive Readers Coalition (CRC), we believe that reading confidence is the foundation of character. When a young man can walk into a room, speak with authority, and understand the complex language of the world around him, he becomes unstoppable. Today, we are launching our "Word of the Day" deep-dive series, a micro-blog journey designed to sharpen your mind and elevate your spirit in just 60 seconds.
The Power of One Word
Why does one word matter? Because language is the tool we use to build our reality. Too often, our young men are underserved by systems that don't recognize their brilliance. By mastering high-level, academic, and character-building vocabulary, we are "snipping away at illiteracy" and clearing the path for a remarkable future. We aren't just reading books; we are rewriting the narrative of our community.
Today’s word is a heavy hitter. It’s a word that commands respect. It’s a word that defines the very essence of what we strive for at the CRC.
Word of the Day: Erudition
Definition: Erudition (noun): Extensive knowledge acquired chiefly from books; profound, scholarly learning.
Etymology: The word comes from the Latin eruditio, which stems from erudire, meaning "to instruct." If you break it down further, e- means "out of" and rudis means "rude" or "untaught." Essentially, erudition is the process of being polished: moving out of a state of not knowing and into a state of high-level mastery.
Application in the Community: "By pursuing erudition through the CRC programs, our young leaders are preparing to transition FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM with the confidence to lead their communities toward a brighter, more equitable future."

Meet Professor Antonio: Your Guide to Greatness
You’ll see a lot of Professor Antonio around here. Whether he’s in his CRC Polo, a Professional Suit, or a Barber Cape, he’s always ready to drop some gems. Professor Antonio represents the bridge between our heritage and our future. He knows that the same focus it takes to master a fresh fade is the same focus it takes to master a complex text.
He is the face of our movement, reminding every young man in Pinellas County that being a "Competitive Reader" is a badge of honor. He isn't just a teacher; he’s a mentor who has seen the evolution of our coalition as we move into this inspiring new chapter of growth.
Why 60 Seconds?
We get it: life moves fast. Between school, sports, and hanging out with friends, you might think you don't have time to build a massive vocabulary. But brilliance doesn't always require hours of study; sometimes, it just requires 60 seconds of intentionality.
To master "Erudition" in 60 seconds, try the Look-Say-Apply method:
Look: Stare at the word for 10 seconds. Visualize the letters.
Say: Pronounce it clearly (air-yoo-DISH-un). Say it three times.
Apply: Use it in a sentence about your goals. "I am building my erudition so I can own my own business one day."
When you do this daily, you aren't just learning words; you are building the mental muscles needed for lifelong success.
From the Barbershop to the Boardroom
CRC is more than just a literacy program; it is a movement. We operate within the heart of our community: in barbershops and other trusted community spaces. This is where the magic happens. Our signature program, FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM, is designed to take the natural leadership and grit found in our local spots and channel it into professional excellence.
We’ve seen the data. Literacy rates are directly tied to the school-to-prison pipeline. By intervening with high-level vocabulary and a love for reading, we are actively dismantling that pipeline and replacing it with a pipeline to the boardroom. Our Youth Workforce Development and Training program is a key part of this, focusing on "Equipping the Next Generation of Leaders" to handle any professional environment with poise and, of course, erudition.

Building Generational Wealth: The 5th Pillar
We believe that a leader who can read is a leader who can lead his family to prosperity. That is why we have expanded our mission to include a 5th pillar: the Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program, in partnership with LMCU.
Under the theme “Building Generational Wealth through Literacy and Ownership,” we are teaching our families that the words in a mortgage contract or a business loan shouldn't be intimidating. When you have the vocabulary to understand the fine print, you have the power to own the land. Literacy is the first step toward homeownership and building a legacy that lasts for generations.

The 8-Program Family
CRC’s impact is broad and deep. We offer an 8-program family of services that address the whole person. From Youth Tours and Career Explorations to our Empowering Communities initiatives, we are here to support every step of the journey.
We invite you to explore our online programs and join the discussion in our community forums. Whether it’s a sleepover at the Florida Aquarium or a presentation with Ty Allan Jackson, every event is an opportunity to grow.

A Vibrant Future Awaits
We are standing on the edge of a remarkable transformation. Every time a young man chooses to pick up a book instead of a distraction, the entire community rises. Every time a father reads with his son, a new brick is laid in the foundation of generational wealth.
