Every young man in Pinellas County carries a dormant power within him: the power of the tongue and the strength of a sharp mind. At The Competitive Readers Coalition (CRC), we believe that literacy is not just a school subject; it is the ultimate tool for liberation. It is the bridge that carries our sons from the uncertainty of the streets to the stability of the executive suite. When we talk about "The Simple Trick" to improve vocabulary, we aren’t talking about boring flashcards or outdated textbooks. We are talking about a daily transformation. We are talking about the "Word of the Day."
By introducing just one elevated, high-level academic word into your home each day, you are effectively snipping away at the threads of illiteracy and low expectations. You are equipping your son with the armor he needs to navigate a world that often judges him before he even speaks. Today, we dive deep into a word that separates the followers from the leaders: Sagacity.
The Word of the Day: Sagacity
When we look at the leaders in our community: the men who have built businesses, the fathers who have anchored families, and the mentors who guide our youth: they all share one invisible trait. It isn't just intelligence. It isn't just "street smarts." It is Sagacity.
Definition: According to Merriam-Webster, sagacity is the quality of being sagacious, which means possessing keen and farsighted penetration and judgment. In simpler terms, it is the ability to make good decisions and use sound judgment based on experience and wisdom.
Etymology (Origin): The word "sagacity" has deep roots. it comes from the Middle French sagacité, which originates from the Latin sagacitas. This stems from sagax, meaning "keen-scented" or "quick-scented." Imagine a hunter who can catch a scent from a mile away and know exactly which path to take. That is what sagacity does for a young man’s mind; it allows him to "smell" a bad situation or a good opportunity long before others see it.

Visual: Professor Antonio, with his signature bald head, wearing a crisp CRC Polo, stands in a vibrant St. Petersburg neighborhood, pointing toward a library with an inspiring look of determination.
Why Sagacity Matters in the Real World
For our young men, sagacity is the difference between reacting and responding. In a world that often demands an immediate (and sometimes impulsive) reaction, sagacity teaches a young man to pause. It is the capacity to perceive subtle distinctions and exercise keen judgment in complex situations.
Imagine a young man standing on a street corner in St. Pete. He is faced with a choice that could lead him toward the school-to-prison pipeline or toward a future of greatness. A smart boy knows the rules. A sagacious boy understands the consequences. He sees the "unspoken elements" of the situation. He anticipates the future outcomes. He uses his sagacity to choose the path that leads him home.
The CRC Application: "By showing sagacity in his choice of friends and mentors, Marcus ensured his path led FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM, rather than toward the pitfalls of the school-to-prison pipeline."
From the Barbershop to the Boardroom
At The Competitive Readers Coalition, we don't just teach kids how to read words; we teach them how to read the world. Our flagship program, FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM, uses the trusted community space of the barbershop to foster these conversations.
The barbershop is a place of transformation. You walk in one way and walk out another. We apply that same logic to the mind. When Professor Antonio walks into the shop, he isn’t just there for a line-up. He is there to drop seeds of wisdom.

In these spaces, our CRC barbershop mentors: trusted men in the community: help boys build self-awareness. They use the "Word of the Day" to spark dialogue. When a boy learns the word "sagacity" while sitting in a barber chair, that word becomes linked to a feeling of confidence and community. He begins to see himself not just as a student, but as a future leader who possesses "acute mental discernment."
Building Generational Wealth through Literacy and Ownership
One of the most important ways sagacity manifests is through our 5th pillar: the Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program, supported by our partners at LMCU. We believe that literacy is the foundation for building generational wealth.
True sagacity involves understanding that the money earned today should be the seed for the house owned tomorrow. It takes sound judgment to navigate the world of credit scores, interest rates, and property investment. By teaching our young men high-level academic vocabulary, we are giving them the language of the boardroom. When they can speak the language of the bank, they can own the bank.
Generational wealth is about ownership. It’s about moving from being a consumer to being an owner. Through our "Youth Workforce Development and Training" initiatives, we are equipping the next generation of leaders to transition from the neighborhood shop to the professional world with their heads held high and their vocabularies expanded.

The Power of Daily Micro-Learning
You might wonder, "Can one word a day really make a difference?" The answer is a resounding yes. This is the third installment in our deep-dive series, following the words Erudition and Acumen. By the time a young man masters Sagacity, Efficacy, Reciprocity, Magnanimity, and Lexicon, his entire perspective on himself changes.
He is no longer just "a kid from the neighborhood." He is a young man of erudition. He is a leader with acumen. He is a visionary with sagacity. These aren't just words; they are identities.

A Message for the Parents
Moms, Dads, Grandparents: you are the first teachers. When you use words like "sagacity" at the dinner table, you are showing your son that you believe he is capable of understanding the highest levels of thought. You are setting a bar that he will strive to reach.
Don't be afraid of the "big words." Embrace them. Let your son see you looking up definitions. Let him see you exercising your own sagacity in your daily life. Whether it’s deciding how to invest your tax return or how to resolve a conflict with a neighbor, narrate your thought process. Show him what "sound judgment" looks like in action.
The Competitive Readers Coalition is here to support you. We are more than a non-profit; we are a family. We are a movement dedicated to ensuring that every young man of color in our community has the tools to write his own story: a story of success, ownership, and profound wisdom.
Stay tuned for our next Word of the Day deep-dive, where we will explore the power of Efficacy. Until then, keep reading, keep growing, and keep leadin' with sagacity.
