In the vibrant streets of St. Petersburg and across the wider Pinellas community, our young men are constantly standing at crossroads. Every sunrise brings a fresh set of choices: some small, like which book to pick up, and some monumental, like how to respond to a challenge in the streets or a deadline in the classroom. At The Competitive Readers Coalition (CRC), we believe that the difference between a life of struggle and a life of remarkable success often boils down to a single, transformative virtue. It is the ability to look at a situation, weigh the outcomes, and move with intentionality. It is the art of the "smart move."
Today, we are diving deep into a concept that serves as the foundation for leadership and the ultimate tool for navigating the journey FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM.
The Word of the Day: Prudence
Definition: Prudence is the ability to govern and discipline oneself by the use of reason. it is practical wisdom: the capacity to discern the most appropriate, virtuous, and effective course of action in any given situation.
Etymology: The word traces back to the Old French prudence, originating from the Latin prudentia, which is a contracted form of providentia, meaning "foresight" or "forethought." Literally, it is the act of looking ahead before you step.
In Action:“By practicing prudence, a young man learns to value his reputation over temporary hype, ensuring his moves today build a bridge to his success tomorrow.”

Why Prudence is the "Mother of All Virtues"
In our work at CRC, we often talk about "snipping away at illiteracy." But literacy isn't just about decoding words on a page; it’s about decoding the world around you. Prudence is the intellectual engine that drives character. You can be courageous, but without prudence, courage becomes recklessness. You can be generous, but without prudence, you might give away the very tools you need to build your own house.
For the young men in our programs, from those just learning their first words to those participating in our Youth Workforce Development and Training, prudence is the "internal GPS." It helps them navigate the complexities of life in Pinellas, allowing them to dodge the traps of the school-to-prison pipeline and instead chart a course toward generational wealth and community leadership.
From the Barbershop: Prudence in the Community
The barbershop has always been the "Black Man’s Country Club": a place of wisdom, debate, and mentorship. When a young man sits in the chair for a "Competitive Readers Cut," he isn't just getting a fade; he’s entering a sacred space of learning.
Prudence in the barbershop looks like listening more than talking. It looks like observing the elders, understanding the value of networking, and realizing that the conversations held while getting a shape-up can lead to job opportunities or life-changing advice. By engaging with our Books Beyond the Rooted Series, our youth learn to apply the lessons of history and literature to their daily lives. They learn that every action has a consequence, and the prudent man considers those consequences before he speaks or acts.

To the Boardroom: Equipping the Next Generation of Leaders
As our youth grow, the stakes get higher. The transition FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM requires a shift in strategy. This is where our focus on Youth Workforce Development and Training becomes essential. In a professional setting, prudence is synonymous with "Strategic Thinking."
It involves:
Counsel: Seeking advice from mentors and researching the market.
Judgment: Deciding which path aligns with your core values.
Command: Executing that decision with confidence and precision.
When we take our young men on Youth Tours & Career Explorations, we are showing them what prudence looks like in the corporate world. It’s the executive who decides to invest in community literacy because they know a literate workforce is a more productive one. It’s the entrepreneur who manages their capital wisely to ensure their business thrives for decades, not just days.
Building Generational Wealth through Literacy and Ownership
A major pillar of the CRC mission is our Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program, partnered with LMCU. We believe in building generational wealth through literacy and ownership. You cannot have wealth without prudence.
Prudence is the voice that tells you to save when others are spending. It’s the discipline to study the terms of a mortgage or an investment account. By integrating financial literacy into our "Word of the Day" series, we are teaching our youth that their "Lexicon" (the words they know) directly impacts their "Efficacy" (their ability to produce a result).

A Movement of Empowered Minds
The Competitive Readers Coalition is more than just a non-profit; it is an inspiring community of dreamers and doers. Whether we are hosting a Sleepover with the Fish at the Florida Aquarium or a Danny Dollar Presentation with Ty Allan Jackson, our goal remains the same: to provide the tools necessary for our young men to lead vibrant, successful lives.
