Welcome to CRC's Word of the Day Series
Every word our sons learn is a tool. Every new term they master? That's power they carry with them, into classrooms, job interviews, barbershop conversations, and boardrooms.
That's exactly why The Competitive Readers Coalition (CRC) is launching our Word of the Day series. Each day, we're diving deep into one elevated word that builds vocabulary, sharpens minds, and reinforces the identity-centered programming at the heart of everything we do.
Today's word is a game-changer. It's about sharp thinking, smart choices, and the kind of judgment that separates dreamers from doers.
Let's get into it.
Today's Word: ACUMEN

🎨 Graphic Direction for Sonny:Picture a mini Afrocentric comic character version of Coach Antonio (CRC), confident stance, maybe wearing a CRC polo or a fresh barbershop cape, with a speech bubble that says "ACUMEN" in bold letters. The background could feature icons representing smart decision-making: a lightbulb, a chess piece, dollar signs, or a graph going up. Keep it clean, colorful, and kid-friendly while feeling aspirational.
How Do You Say It?
Pronunciation: uh-KYOO-muhn
Say it out loud. Let it roll off your tongue. Now say it like you mean it.
Acumen.
That's a word that commands respect when you use it correctly.
What Does Acumen Mean?
Quick Definition: Sharp judgment and the ability to make smart decisions: especially in practical, real-world situations.
Think of acumen as mental sharpness. It's not just about knowing things; it's about using what you know to make the right call at the right time.
The word comes from Latin, where acumen originally meant "a point" or "sting": like the sharp tip of a needle. Over time, it evolved to describe intellectual sharpness. The root word acuere means "to sharpen."
So when we talk about acumen, we're talking about a mind that's been sharpened: honed through learning, experience, and intentional practice.
Acumen in Action: Example Sentences
Here's how you might hear acumen used in everyday conversation: CRC style:
Example 1: "Marcus showed real business acumen when he saved part of his allowance and invested in supplies for his lawn care side hustle."
Example 2: "The mentors at CRC help young men develop financial acumen so they can build wealth for themselves and their families."
Example 3: "Coach Antonio always says that reading builds acumen: the more you learn, the sharper your decisions become."
Notice how acumen often pairs with a specific area? You'll hear people talk about business acumen, financial acumen, political acumen, or even artistic acumen. It's about being sharp in a particular domain.

Why Acumen Matters for Our Sons
Let's keep it real: the world doesn't always set our young Black and Brown boys up to win. Systems aren't always designed with them in mind. That's exactly why vocabulary like acumen matters.
When a young man can walk into a room and talk about developing his "business acumen" or demonstrate "financial acumen" in how he manages his money, he's signaling something powerful. He's saying: I'm sharp. I'm prepared. I belong here.
Acumen Builds Confidence
Knowing the right words gives our sons confidence in spaces where they might otherwise feel out of place. When a 12-year-old can explain that he's "building acumen" through his reading and community involvement, adults take notice. Doors open.
Acumen Connects to Leadership
Leaders aren't just born: they're developed. And one of the key traits of effective leaders? Acumen. The ability to assess situations quickly, weigh options, and make sound judgments. That's the kind of skill we build through CRC's identity-centered programming.
Acumen Is About Agency
When our sons understand that acumen can be developed: that it's not something you either have or don't have: they realize they have agency over their own futures. Reading, mentorship, financial education, workforce training: these are all tools for sharpening acumen.
Try It at Home: The 60-Second Acumen Challenge
Here's a quick activity you can do with your child tonight. It takes less than a minute but plants a seed that can grow for a lifetime.
The Prompt:
"If someone gave you $100 right now, what's the smartest way you could use it: and why?"
Let your child think it through. There's no single right answer. The goal is to get them reasoning: weighing options, considering consequences, thinking about short-term versus long-term benefits.
Follow-Up Questions:
Would you spend it, save it, or invest it?
What would happen if you spent it all today versus waiting a month?
Is there a way to use part of it to make more money?
This is acumen in action. You're not just teaching them about money: you're teaching them how to think.

How CRC Builds Acumen Every Day
At The Competitive Readers Coalition, acumen isn't just a vocabulary word: it's woven into everything we do across our 8-program family.
Youth Workforce Development and Training
Our Youth Workforce Development and Training program is all about equipping the next generation of leaders with the skills they need to transition from the shop to the professional world. That means building practical acumen: interview skills, workplace communication, financial literacy, and professional decision-making.
When a young man completes this program, he doesn't just have a certificate: he has sharpened judgment and real-world readiness.
Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program (Partner: LMCU)
In partnership with Lake Michigan Credit Union, CRC's Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program is designed around one transformative theme: Building Generational Wealth through Literacy and Ownership.
Financial acumen is at the core of this work. We teach young people and families how to:
Understand credit and debt
Create budgets that actually work
Save strategically for major goals
Navigate the path to homeownership
When our sons develop financial acumen early, they're positioned to break cycles and build legacies.
Educational content only. This is not financial, legal, or tax advice.
From the Barbershop to the Boardroom
Our flagship mentorship pathway, From the Barbershop to the Boardroom, is built on the idea that trusted community spaces: like barbershops: are powerful incubators for leadership development. Acumen grows in these spaces through conversation, modeling, and real-world mentorship.
When a young man sits in a barber's chair and hears a successful entrepreneur break down how he made a key business decision, that's acumen being transferred in real time.
The Bigger Picture: Vocabulary as Power
Here's something we believe deeply at CRC: your lexicon is your power.
The more words our sons have access to, the more clearly they can think, communicate, and advocate for themselves. Acumen is just one word in a much larger toolkit we're building together.
Over the coming days, we'll be diving into more elevated vocabulary:
Erudition (deep knowledge)
Sagacity (wisdom)
Efficacy (the power to produce results)
Reciprocity (mutual support)
Magnanimity (big-hearted leadership)
Lexicon (your personal word-bank)
Each word connects back to CRC's identity-centered mission: helping young Black and Brown boys and men see themselves as readers, leaders, and builders of their own futures.

Your Challenge Today
Use the word acumen at least once today. Drop it in conversation. Text it to a friend. Ask your child what they think it means.
Language is a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets.
