At The Competitive Readers Coalition (CRC), we believe that literacy is about more than just reading words on a page: it's about building the inner strength to navigate the world with confidence. This week, we’re diving into a word that defines the heart of every leader we mentor in the St. Petersburg community.
The Word: Conviction
Definition (Merriam-Webster): "A strong belief or opinion" / "a strong persuasion or belief."
Origin & Etymology: From the Latin convincere ("to overcome, conquer, demonstrate"), which combines com- (an intensive prefix) and vincere ("to conquer"). Historically, it suggests a truth that has been "conquered into certainty" in one’s mind.
Why It Matters: Conviction gives young men the unshakeable confidence to stand by their values, speak their truth, and lead with purpose: whether they're in the barbershop, the classroom, or the boardroom.
Standing Tall in the Community
In our program FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM, we see conviction in action every day. It’s the young man who chooses to pick up a book despite peer pressure. It’s the student who sets a goal for his future and refuses to let obstacles stop him. When you have conviction, you aren’t easily swayed by the noise; you are anchored by your own brilliance and identity.
