Every child carries a universe of potential within them, a spark that, when nurtured, can light up an entire community. In the heart of St. Petersburg and throughout Pinellas County, our young men are the future architects, leaders, and visionaries of our neighborhoods. However, the path from the barbershop chair to the boardroom isn’t just paved with opportunities; it’s built on a foundation of character, literacy, and unwavering support. At The Competitive Readers Coalition (CRC), we believe that every interaction: even a routine haircut: is a transformative moment to pour into our youth.
Building character isn’t a one-time event; it’s a lifelong journey of small, consistent steps. For parents and families in our vibrant Florida communities, finding ways to make character-building both engaging and culturally relevant is key. That’s why we’ve introduced the Word of the Day series: to equip our young men with the elevated vocabulary they need to navigate the world with confidence and poise. Today, we are diving deep into a word that sits at the very core of success: Diligence.
The Word of the Day: Diligence
Before we break down how to build this trait in our kids, let’s look at exactly what we’re talking about.
Word: Diligence Definition: According to Merriam-Webster, diligence is a steady, earnest, and energetic effort; persistent and careful hard work. Etymology: This word traces its roots back to the Latin diligentia, meaning "carefulness" or "attentiveness." It comes from diligere, which translates to "to value highly," "to love," or "to choose." Originally, to be diligent meant to do something with love and care because you valued the outcome. Application: "By applying diligence to his reading practice at the barbershop, Jalen not only improved his grades but also earned the respect of his peers as a leader in our community."

Why Diligence Matters in St. Pete
We see it every day in our local shops: the remarkable talent of our young men is often limited only by the resources and expectations placed upon them. Research shows that youth who develop strong character traits like diligence and self-discipline are significantly more likely to overcome systemic challenges, including the school-to-prison pipeline. In fact, a steady focus on literacy and work ethic has been shown to improve academic outcomes by over 30% in underserved communities.
Diligence is the tool that helps our boys "snip away" at the obstacles in their path. It is the bridge between a dream and its realization. Whether it’s mastering a difficult book or learning the ropes of financial literacy, a diligent spirit ensures that they don’t just start: they finish.
5 Steps to Building Character through Diligence
Building a "Competitive Reader" requires more than just books; it requires a mindset. Here is how St. Pete parents can help their sons cultivate diligence using our Word of the Day approach.
1. Make the Word Part of the Environment
Transformation begins with language. To build character, we must first name the traits we want to see. Start by introducing the word "Diligence" in your daily conversations. When you see your son working hard on a chore or finishing a difficult chapter in a book, don't just say "good job." Say, "I see your diligence in action." By using academic vocabulary, you are giving him the tools to see himself as a scholar. Our programs focus on this "identity-centered" learning where our boys see themselves represented in the words they use.
2. Model the "Steady Effort" at Home and in the Shop
Our sons learn more from what we do than what we say. Whether you are managing your home or growing your career, share your process with them. Explain that success isn't about luck; it's about persistent, careful work. At the barbershop, this is modeled every time a barber takes the time to perfect a fade. That attention to detail is diligence. In our program, FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM, we connect these everyday community skills to professional excellence, showing our youth that the same diligence they see in their neighborhood is what will make them successful in any office or boardroom in the world.

3. Connect Literacy to Leadership
Character is built when a child realizes that their skills have a purpose. Encourage your son to be a "Competitive Reader." This doesn't mean just reading fast; it means reading with care and attentiveness. When he finishes a book through CRC, he isn't just reading: he is Equipping the Next Generation of Leaders. Use literacy as a training ground for character. If he can be diligent with a complex text, he can be diligent with a business plan or a community project. This is the heart of our Youth Workforce Development and Training, where we transition youth from the shop to the professional world.
4. Build Generational Wealth through Ownership
Diligence isn't just for schoolwork; it's for the future. As part of our 5th pillar in the CRC Program Overviews, we focus on Financial Literacy and Homeownership in partnership with LMCU. Teach your son that building generational wealth through literacy and ownership requires a long-term, diligent plan. Discussing concepts like saving, investing, and the value of a home early on helps them understand that their hard work today builds a legacy for tomorrow. This empowers them to not just participate in the economy, but to own pieces of it.

5. Use Community Resources to Reinforce the Lesson
You don’t have to do this alone. CRC is here to support you. Our mission is to create safe, vibrant learning environments in the spaces you already trust: like our local barbershops. By participating in CRC programming, your son becomes part of a larger movement. He isn't just a boy reading a book; he is a member of the coalition. When he sees other young men in Pinellas county showing diligence, it normalizes excellence and creates a positive peer culture.
The Path Forward: From the Barbershop to the Boardroom
We are more than a book club; we are a community of families dedicated to seeing our sons thrive. The transition FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM is about more than just a career path: it's about the evolution of a young man’s spirit. By focusing on words like diligence, we are giving our youth the armor they need to face any challenge with grace and the tools they need to build a life of impact.
