Beyond Books: Free Books, Fresh Cuts, and Home Libraries for A.L.I.C.E. Families

What does it really mean to build something that lasts? For families across St. Petersburg and Pinellas County, it’s more than a paycheck or a savings account. True generational wealth is about pathways: confidence, consistency, and community support that gets passed down from fathers to sons and from families to neighborhoods.

At The Competitive Readers Coalition (CRC), we’re building those pathways with literacy at the center: especially for youth and families in A.L.I.C.E. Communities (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). These are hardworking families doing their best, but still getting squeezed by the cost of living.

That’s why CRC brings literacy into barbershops and other trusted community spaces: because when a young man feels seen and supported, he’s more likely to take the next step.

And the impact is real:

  • 595+ Books Distributed

  • 446+ Free Haircuts Given

  • 357+ Families Served

Our model is simple, casual, and powerful: free books, free haircuts, and helping families build home libraries—one visit at a time.

We’re also excited to keep growing our Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program (Partner: LMCU) because building wealth through literacy and ownership is part of the same mission.

The CRC Core Pillars: Books, Cuts, and Home Libraries

CRC’s work is built on three core pillars that meet families where they are—without judgment, without red tape, and without making parents choose between necessities:

  1. Free books so boys can read what interests them and see themselves in stories.

  2. Free haircuts so youth can show up to school and life feeling confident and cared for.

  3. Building home libraries so reading doesn’t stop at the barbershop door.

In A.L.I.C.E. households, small costs add up fast. A haircut, a book fair purchase, a “recommended” reading list—those things can become barriers. CRC’s approach is to remove the barrier and replace it with a routine that feels normal: pick a book, talk about it, get a fresh cut, and keep building that home library over time.

One of our guiding beliefs is simple: when reading becomes part of a young man’s identity, the rest starts to shift too—school choices, friend groups, confidence, and even how he sees his future.

Central Station Barbershop: Where the Mission Lives (and Grows)

CRC’s barbershop-based literacy work is powered through trusted community spaces like Central Station Barbershop here in St. Petersburg. It’s the kind of place where a young man can walk in for a cut and leave with something bigger: a book in his hands and belief in himself.

That’s also why we talk about home libraries so much. A home library doesn’t have to be fancy. It can start with one book on a nightstand, then five books on a shelf, then a whole corner of the house where reading feels normal.

And here’s a big piece many people don’t know: every premium barbershop membership ($400/mo) includes a book to promote literacy and support father-child bonding. It’s one more way we keep reading in the routine—because when dads and father figures lead with literacy, boys follow.

We’ve been blessed to see this work get love beyond the city too, with media features including The Jennifer Hudson Show and FOX 13. We don’t chase the spotlight—but we do appreciate when it helps more families find the program.

What the Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program Offers

So what does this program actually look like? Here's a snapshot of what families can expect:

Financial Education Workshops Interactive sessions designed for real life: not textbooks. We cover budgeting basics, understanding credit scores, saving strategies, and how to navigate the homebuying process. These workshops are built for families at every stage, whether you're just starting to think about your financial future or you're ready to take the leap into homeownership.

Homeownership Support Buying a home can feel overwhelming, especially if no one in your family has done it before. Through our partnership with LMCU, participants get access to down payment assistance programs and step-by-step guidance through the mortgage process. Homeownership is one of the most powerful wealth-building tools available: and we want to make it accessible for every family in our community.

Entrepreneurship Pathways For the young men coming through programs like From the Barbershop to the Boardroom and the Barber-Preneur Program, we know that many of them have big dreams of starting their own businesses. LMCU's Micro Business Loans are designed to take the smallest entrepreneur and help them grow: from side hustle to small business to something even bigger. That's the kind of pipeline our community needs.

Family-Centered Approach This program isn't just for individuals: it's for families. We encourage dads, father figures, and caregivers to participate alongside their sons. When financial knowledge is shared across generations, it sticks. That's how you build wealth that lasts.

The Connection Between Literacy and Wealth

You might be wondering: what does reading have to do with money?

Everything.

Literacy is the foundation of every financial decision you'll ever make. Reading a lease agreement. Understanding the terms of a loan. Researching investment options. Filling out a job application. Every single one of these tasks requires strong literacy skills.

At CRC, we've seen firsthand how literacy transforms lives. Through programs like The Dads Treasure Chest, we provide families with curated literacy kits and books that make reading at home simple and consistent. When dads and father figures read with their children, they're not just building reading skills: they're building confidence, curiosity, and critical thinking.

And through Our Fatherhood Initiative, we create dedicated spaces for dads and father figures to grow as leaders in their families and communities. When fathers are empowered, entire families rise.

Now, with our Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program, we're adding another layer. We're showing families that the same skills that help you read a book can help you read a contract. The same confidence that helps a young man speak up in a barbershop literacy session can help him negotiate his first business loan.

It all connects.

Building Wealth Right Here in St. Petersburg and Pinellas County

This work isn't happening in some distant city. It's happening right here: in our barbershops, in our community centers, in the neighborhoods where our families live.

St. Petersburg and Pinellas County are home to some of the most vibrant, resilient communities in Florida. But we also know that our community faces real challenges. Economic disparities persist. Access to quality financial education isn't equal. And too many families feel like homeownership or business ownership is out of reach.

That's exactly why CRC exists. We meet families where they are: in trusted community spaces like barbershops: and we bring resources directly to them. No gatekeeping. No judgment. Just real support from people who understand.

When you partner with organizations like LMCU that share your values, you can do even more. You can offer down payment assistance to a father who never thought he'd own a home. You can connect a young entrepreneur with a micro business loan that changes the trajectory of his life. You can host workshops where families learn together and leave feeling empowered.

That's the kind of community impact we're building.

A Vision for Generational Wealth

Let's paint a picture of what generational wealth looks like in action.

Imagine a young man who first encountered CRC at a barbershop literacy session. He fell in love with reading, and that love carried him through school. As a teenager, he joined our Youth Workforce Development and Training program and learned professional skills that prepared him for the working world. Along the way, his father participated in Our Fatherhood Initiative and became a more confident, engaged leader at home.

Now, that young man is in his twenties. He's got a dream of opening his own barbershop. Through our Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program, he learns how to build credit, create a business plan, and apply for a Micro Business Loan through LMCU. A few years later, he's not just running a successful shop: he's also a homeowner. And when he has children of his own, he reads to them every night, just like his father did.

That's generational wealth. It's not just about money in the bank. It's about knowledge, confidence, and opportunity that gets passed down.

Beyond Books, Beyond Boundaries

At The Competitive Readers Coalition, we've always known that literacy is just the beginning. When you teach a young man to read, you open a door. When you teach him about financial literacy, homeownership, and entrepreneurship, you show him what's possible on the other side.

Our partnership with LMCU is about more than programs and workshops. It's about building a future where every family in St. Petersburg and Pinellas County has the tools to create lasting wealth: wealth that doesn't disappear with one setback, but grows stronger with each generation.

This is the work. This is the mission. And we're just getting started.
