The journey to greatness often begins with a single step, but for the young kings in our community, it begins with a single word. In the heart of St. Petersburg and across Pinellas County, we believe that literacy is the ultimate tool for liberation. It is the bridge that carries a young man from the barber’s chair to the executive suite. At The Competitive Readers Coalition (CRC), we aren’t just teaching boys how to read; we are equipping them with the vocabulary to rewrite their own futures.
Building character doesn’t always require a four-year degree or a lifetime of study; sometimes, it happens in sixty-second intervals. Our "Word of the Day" series is designed to spark a fire in the minds of young men ages 1 to 18, transforming the way they see themselves and the world around them. Today, we dive deep into a word that represents the very peak of intellectual pursuit.
The Word of the Day: Erudition
When we talk about excellence, we aren't just talking about athleticism or talent. We are talking about the cultivation of the mind. Today’s word is Erudition.
Definition: Erudition (noun): Extensive knowledge acquired chiefly from books; profound, scholarly learning. It is the quality of having or showing great knowledge or learning.
Etymology: The word finds its roots in the Latin eruditio, which comes from erudire, meaning "to instruct." If we look closer at the Latin structure, it is formed from e- (a variant of ex-, meaning "out of") and rudis (meaning "rude" or "unskilled"). Essentially, to achieve erudition is to be led "out of the unskilled state." It is the process of refining one's raw potential into a polished, scholarly force.
Application for Success: "By pursuing a path of erudition, our young men transform from passive observers of history into the vibrant architects of their own professional destinies, ensuring they are always the smartest person in the room."
Professor Antonio’s Insight

Meet Professor Antonio. You’ll see him often in our "Word of the Day" series. Whether he’s wearing his sharp Professional Suit, his crisp CRC Polo, or his Barber Cape, he represents the versatile excellence we strive for. Today, Professor Antonio is in his CRC Polo, reminding us that erudition isn't about being "better" than anyone else; it's about being better than you were yesterday.
"Erudition is your superpower," Professor Antonio says. "When you walk into a room with a vast lexicon and a sharp mind, you change the energy. You aren't just a face in the crowd; you are a leader with the knowledge to back up your vision."
Snipping Away at Illiteracy: From the Barbershop to the Boardroom
At CRC, we specialize in meeting our youth where they are. Our flagship program, FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM, is more than just a literacy initiative; it’s a transformative experience. We bring the library to the trusted community spaces where our young men already feel at home. In the barbershop, the buzz of the clippers serves as the background music to the pursuit of knowledge.
We are literally "snipping away at illiteracy." By integrating reading into the grooming ritual, we normalize intellectual curiosity. We believe that every young man getting a "Competitive Readers Cut" is also sharpening his mind. This program is the first step in our mission to transition youth from the shop to the professional world.

Equipping the Next Generation of Leaders
Our commitment to our young men doesn't stop at the barber’s chair. Through our Youth Workforce Development and Training program, we focus on the practical application of the literacy skills we build. We are equipping the next generation of leaders with the tools they need to navigate the professional landscape. This includes interview prep, professional etiquette, and, of course, the erudition required to communicate effectively in high-stakes environments.
We know that for BIPOC youth, the barriers to success are often systemic. The school-to-prison pipeline is a reality that many in Pinellas face. However, literacy is a shield against those statistics. Data shows that students who read at grade level by the third grade are significantly more likely to graduate high school and find stable employment. By fostering a culture of reading, CRC is actively dismantling negative cycles and replacing them with cycles of achievement.
Building Generational Wealth through Literacy and Ownership
In 2026, we are proud to emphasize the 5th pillar of our programming: the Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program, in partnership with Lake Michigan Credit Union (LMCU). We believe that true empowerment includes the ability to build and sustain wealth.
Erudition isn't just for literature; it’s for contracts, deeds, and investment portfolios. Our partnership with LMCU ensures that our young men and their families understand the mechanics of credit, the importance of saving, and the power of owning the ground they stand on. Building generational wealth starts with literacy: the ability to read the fine print and the wisdom to plan for the future.
The CRC 8-Program Family
Our approach is holistic. We understand that a young man’s development is multifaceted. That’s why we operate an 8-program family that addresses every stage of growth:
FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM – Literacy in community spaces.
Youth Workforce Development and Training – Preparing for professional life.
Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program (Partner: LMCU) – Wealth building and ownership.
Identity-Centered Mentorship – Connecting youth with leaders who look like them.
Community Engagement Initiatives – Strengthening the bond between families and resources.
Academic Support & Tutoring – Bridging the gap in classroom learning.
Leadership & Civic Responsibility – Teaching the importance of giving back.
