Word of the Day: Integrity (CRC) , How to Lead with Integrity: A 60-Second Lesson for Young Men

The journey to greatness isn't paved with shortcuts or secrets; it is built on the bedrock of character. For the young men in our St. Petersburg community, the path from the sidewalk to the executive suite requires more than just talent, it requires a transformative commitment to who you are when no one is watching. Leadership isn't a title given to you by a boss; it is a vibrant energy you project when your actions align perfectly with your heart.

In a world that often tries to define young Black and Brown men by external circumstances, we choose to define ourselves by our internal standards. We are standing at a pivotal moment in history where literacy and character are the ultimate tools for liberation. When we speak of leading with integrity, we aren't just talking about being "good." We are talking about being whole, being reliable, and being the kind of man that a community can lean on without fear of him folding.

Word of the Day: Integrity

Definition: The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. It is the state of being whole and undivided.

Etymology: The word "integrity" finds its roots in the Middle English integrite, stemming from the Old French integrité, and ultimately from the Latin integritatem. The Latin root integer means "whole" or "untouched." Just like in math, an integer is a whole number, not a fraction. When you have integrity, you aren't a fraction of a man; you are the whole thing.

How to use it in a sentence:"By choosing to lead with integrity, Marcus ensured that his reputation in the FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM program was as solid as his work ethic, proving that a man’s word is his most valuable currency."

The 60-Second Lesson: How to Lead with Integrity

Leadership isn't about the loud commands or the flashy clothes. It’s about the quiet consistency of your soul. Here is how you can practice integrity in your daily life, starting right now:

1. Know Your North Star

Integrity begins with knowing what you stand for. If you don’t have a personal code, you’ll fall for anything. Take a moment to identify your core values, whether it’s respect, family, or education. When a decision gets tough, ask yourself: "Does this align with my North Star?" If the answer is no, the move is simple: don't do it.

2. The Power of Consistency

A leader with integrity is the same person in the barbershop as he is in the classroom. Your words and your actions must be a matched set. If you tell your younger brother you’re going to help him with his reading, you show up. Reliability is the silent language of respect. When you are consistent, you build a remarkable level of trust with those around you.

3. Own Your Mistakes

Part of being "whole" is accepting your flaws. When you mess up: and we all do: don’t shift the blame. Don't look for excuses. Stand tall, own the error, and fix it. This doesn't make you weak; it makes you authentic. Authenticity is a magnet for success. In our Youth Workforce Development and Training program, we teach that the most respected men in the boardroom aren't the ones who never fail, but the ones who never lie about their failures.

4. Communicate with Transparency

Be honest about your intentions. If you can’t do something, say so. It is better to decline an invitation than to accept and disappear. Clear, honest communication reduces confusion and shows that you value other people's time as much as your own.

Snipping Away at Illiteracy and Injustice

At The Competitive Readers Coalition (CRC), we believe that literacy is the first step toward true integrity. You cannot lead a community if you cannot read the laws, the contracts, or the history that shapes your world. We are dedicated to dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline by replacing uncertainty with the power of the written word.

When a young man sits in the barber chair for a "Competitive Readers Cut," he isn't just getting a fade; he is engaging in a ritual of empowerment. Our partners at Central Station Barbershop & Grooming know that the shop has always been the heartbeat of our community. It’s where stories are told and lessons are passed down.

By bringing literacy into these trusted community spaces, we are making education accessible and inspiring. We’ve seen a remarkable 45% increase in reading engagement among participants who feel that their cultural identity is celebrated in their learning environment. This isn't just a program; it's a movement.

From the Shop to the Boardroom: Equipping the Next Generation

Our flagship program, FROM THE BARBERSHOP TO THE BOARDROOM, is designed to bridge the gap between childhood and professional excellence. We focus on transitioning youth from the comfort of their neighborhoods into the high-stakes world of professional leadership.

In this program, we emphasize Youth Workforce Development and Training. We teach our young men that integrity is the ultimate professional skill. In a boardroom, your technical skills might get you in the door, but your integrity is what keeps you at the table. We are equipping the next generation of leaders to be men of their word, men of action, and men of profound character.

Building Generational Wealth through Literacy and Ownership

Integrity also extends to how we handle our resources. We are proud to introduce the Financial Literacy and Homeownership Program, in partnership with LMCU. This is the 5th pillar of the CRC mission. We believe that building generational wealth is an act of integrity toward your future family.

Literacy isn't just about reading books; it's about reading balance sheets and mortgage agreements. By understanding the "why" behind homeownership and the "how" of financial management, our young men are learning to secure their futures. We are teaching them that owning a piece of the community is one of the most empowering ways to lead it. Integrity means being a good steward of what you have so that you can provide for those who come after you.

Why Your Voice Matters

Every time you choose to do the right thing when it’s difficult, you are contributing to a larger movement of community healing. Pinellas County has a vibrant history, and you are the authors of its next chapter. When you lead with integrity, you aren't just improving your own life; you are providing a blueprint for every younger boy who is watching you.

You are the proof that greatness is possible. You are the evidence that our community is full of brilliant, capable, and honest men.
